  41. Smiley HT 5/8 wave antennas are superb and  reasonable.  I use them on
  42. all my HTs.  Unfortuneately they don't make a dual band antenna for y'all
  43. with dual banders.  The 2 meter antenna is about 14 inches long and (dare
  44. I say?) exhibits gain over the factory-issued ducky.

  54. I am also interested in the OHR dual band QRP rig.  I recently built the
  55. Switched Capacitor Filter and the Wattmeter.  OHR produce some
  56. really fun kits.  My only drawback to getting one of those rigs is
  57. I have enough (Never thought you'd hear an amateur utter that, eh?)

  68. Comparing an R7 (or any other vertical for that matter) to a beam is like the
  69. old cliche "comparing apples to oranges". The R7 is a decent compromise
  70. for anyone not desiring the maintenence of a beam or lacking the real estate.
  71. I used one until the ice and snow took it out last winter.  I also recommend
  72. the Butternut HF-V9 - great vertical that requires ground radials and
  73. patience for tuning it!

  120. I have three Heil headsets. Two of the open-air style jobs, one with the
  121. #4 and one with the #5.  I also have the newer closed-style headset with
  122. the #5 element.  I think overall, I like the #5, even for contesting.
  123. I typically run about 10 dB of compression, and it seems that with
  124. the compression on, that the wider frequency response element is more
  125. noticible in a pileup.  Maybe it lacks the (industry buzzword follows)
  126. "punch" that the DX element has, but from what I hear listening to myself
  127. on the monitor and on the DVR, I like the #5 better.  Rig on this end is
  128. also a TS-940.

  185. Use the information in the PK232 manual for the Kenwood TS-430/440 through
  186. the 13-pin accessory connector. this is the most reliable point of
  187. connection.

  195. First, the rig must be in FSK, USB, or LSB depending on your preference
  196. (FSK uses the CW filter on LSB). Now watch for RF output power on the meter
  197. (ALWAYS do your testing into a dummy load, not an antenna!). If you are
  198. indeed on the air you will see it there. You can adjust the power output
  199. level by changing the mic gain; don't try for more than about 40 watts and
  200. NEVER drive it so hard that the meter indicates any ALC action.

  202. You did not mention whether you are going in through the mic jack or the
  203. accessory connector on the rear panel. The gain of the transmit audio stage
  204. is much less when using the rear acc connector, while the output is a fixed
  205. level regardless of AF Gain control setting. Also the front microphone line
  206. can be MUTED when you transmit through the rear connector on a TS440. Mine
  207. requires the Mic Gain control to be advanced from 9 o'clock to 1 o'clock to
  208. get 40 watts output, using the absolute maximum audio out from the PK232
  209. and cutting out its 680 ohm resistor. Hopefully Kenwood fixed the low gain
  210. problem of my TS 440 when they re-designed it into the TS450.

  251. My TS850S/AT, which has worked flawlessly for several years (I bought one 
  252. of the first ones sold in Southern California) has developed a problem 
  253. with the antenna tuner:  Even when tuning the rig to an antenna with a 
  254. very low SWR, it periodically will get "stuck" tuning it, at around 1.5 
  255. to 1 or so.  The motor chugs and chugs, but appears unable to "seek" to 
  256. the 1.0 spot.  Sometimes if I switch bands, the problem will disappear, 
  257. but will reappear later.
